Kari Lake to represent Arizona Republicans in Senate race
GOP candidate Kari Lake won over 55 percent of the Republican vote during Arizona’s Tuesday primary, according to unofficial results posted by the secretary of state. Lake, an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump, will face the Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego for a U.S. Senate seat in the November general election. Both aim to replace retiring incumbent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an independent who left the Democratic Party in 2022. Sinema’s election in 2018 marked the first time in nearly 30 years a liberal candidate clinched an Arizona Senate seat. Democrats currently hold a thin majority in the upper chamber, meaning the race to replace Sinema could play a key role in deciding the Senate majority.
Where do they fall on the issues? Lake slammed a pro-life ruling in April by the Arizona Supreme Court that upheld an 1864 law protecting essentially all unborn babies in the state from abortion. Lake took Trump’s latest stance that citizens of individual states should decide how to handle abortion and asked state lawmakers for an immediate solution that made common sense. Gallego touts himself as a moderate who began his career as a U.S. Marine. His campaign highlights his background as the child of Latino immigrants.
