Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema will not run for reelection
The independent announced on Tuesday her intention to step down at the end of her term. Sinema released a video on social media confirming her resignation at the end of 2024, likely leaving Republican Kari Lake and Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego to vie for her seat in the upcoming election. Democrats currently hold a razor-thin majority in the upper chamber, meaning the Arizona election could play a key role in deciding the Senate majority.
Fellow Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly voiced disappointment at Sinema’s departure in a statement released on social media. He highlighted their bi-partisan work together and said Congress “will not be the same without her.”
Did she say why she’s leaving the office? Sinema shared her frustration with the growing partisan division in America, which she said clashed with her belief in working together and compromising. “I believe in my approach,” she said, “but it's not what America wants right now.” She has yet to endorse any candidate to replace her.
