House speaker promises to protect women’s restrooms on Capitol Hill
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday said that all women-only spaces on Capitol Hill and in House office buildings were off-limits to men claiming to be women. Women deserved women-only spaces, he said. Those included restrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas, he said. He also pointed out that each individual House member’s office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms were also widely available.
Why is he saying this? Delaware voters roughly two weeks ago elected the first lawmaker who identifies as transgender, Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., earlier this week proposed a law requiring the House to prohibit men such as McBride from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol.
