Israel’s Netanyahu expected to retake power
The party of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to have won a 65-seat majority in Israeli parliament with about 90 percent of votes counted. More than 70 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in this election—the highest turnout the country has seen since 2015. The election was Israel’s fifth in under four years.
Who is Netanyahu? He served as Israel’s prime minister for a total of 15 years throughout his political career. He is currently on trial for corruption charges—specifically fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes. He argues they are politically motivated.
