House Republicans talk of speeding up speaker vote
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise on Monday were still competing and campaigning to be the next speaker of the House. By Monday evening, some Republicans, such as Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., had begun urging their fellow party members to speed up the process. The United States needs clear leadership immediately, in part to pass aid bills for Israel’s war against the terrorist group Hamas, Scott said. Additionally, the government’s stopgap spending resolution, which is keeping many government offices open, is scheduled to expire on Nov. 17.
How soon are Republicans expected to vote? The first internal Republican Party vote for speaker is scheduled for Wednesday, but not before a candidate forum on Tuesday. Jordan said that his first action as speaker would be to put forward a resolution supporting Israel.
