The House of Representatives on Thursday afternoon passed the revised One Big Beautiful Bill Act in a 218-214 vote after a marathon overnight session. Two Republicans, Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Thomas Massie of Kentucky, joined all Democrats in voting against the budget megabill’s Senate version. The long-contested measure is now headed to President Donald Trump’s desk.
Fitzpatrick said he voted against the bill due to the deeper cuts to Medicaid the Senate added, while Massie cited his concern that the bill would increase deficits and cause inflation. Rep. Keith Self of the House Freedom Caucus said Republican leadership secured several budget hawks’ votes overnight by addressing several spending issues, though the Texas congressman didn’t specify what agreements representatives made.
The vote came after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., broke the House record for the longest speech given using the “magic minute” rule. Jeffries lambasted the bill for 8 hours and 44 minutes before yielding to Speaker Mike Johnson, who, ahead of the vote, encouraged Republicans to pass the measure.
Did the same representatives oppose the previously passed House version of the bill? Two Republicans voted against the bill’s House version in May, when it narrowly passed 215-214. One was Massie; the other was Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio. Davidson supported the measure on Thursday. Several other Republicans who in May marked themselves present or did not vote also voted for the budget bill this time.
When is President Trump expected to sign the bill? White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday that the president plans to sign the bill at 5 p.m. on Friday during the White House’s Fourth of July celebration.
