House OKs Capitol riots commission

In a 252-175 vote, the House approved the formation of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. Most Republicans opposed the legislation, but 35 GOP representatives voted with the majority. The legislation now goes to the Senate, where a showdown is expected between Democrats and Republicans.

What will the proposed commission look like? According to the text of the bill, the commission would be made up of 10 members, appointed evenly by Democrats and Republicans. The chairperson of the commission will be appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The commission will conduct an investigation of the Jan. 6 riots, review and evaluate relevant facts, and produce reports on how to improve the security of the U.S. Capitol complex.
