House votes to keep government open

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., secured the passage of a continuing resolution on Tuesday that would keep the government open through the start of the new calendar year. Members from both political parties voted to pass the measure 336-95. Johnson used a procedural process known as a “suspension of the rules” to bring the measure to the floor. It then required a two-thirds majority to pass. The Senate still has to approve the measure, and President Joe Biden must sign off on it before the end of Friday to avoid a government shutdown.

What’s in this bill? The bill contains staggered budget allotments for different government agencies. Congress must address funding for some agencies by Jan. 19 of next year and others on Feb. 2. Johnson’s continuing resolution did not include the more than $100 billion in funds the White House requested for Ukraine, Israel, and the U.S. southern border.
