Peru’s interim president, José Jerí, on Tuesday evening declared a state of emergency in the capital city of Lima and neighboring Callao. The 30-day declaration would allow authorities to address a crime wave in the country, according to the Peruvian government. Among the emergency rules was a ban on multiple people traveling on the same motorcycle, according to Peruvian outlet Diario Correo.
Jerí’s declaration followed over a month of youth-led protests against the government’s failure to address a rise in violent crime, which led to the impeachment of his predecessor, Dina Boluarte. Protesters also called for Jerí’s resignation, according to the Associated Press. Violent clashes during demonstrations injured 100 people, including police officers and journalists, the AP reported. One man, Eduardo Ruiz, died last week of a gunshot wound sustained during the protests. The Peruvian prosecutor’s office was investigating the police officer accused of shooting him, it said.
