GOP delegates make Trump nomination official
New Yorkers put their hometown candidate over the top during the roll-call vote
In a conclusion to the 2016 Republican presidential primary that seemed almost impossible eight months ago, delegates to the party’s national convention selected billionaire businessman Donald Trump as the GOP nominee.
Although Trump secured enough delegates to win the nomination months ago, efforts to derail the vote continued almost right up to this evening, when state-by-state the delegates raised their hands. Fittingly, the New York delegation put Trump over the official threshold. The famous Broadway show tune “New York, New York” reverberated throughout the convention center while the words “Over the TOP” flashed on the main stage screen against a shimmering gold background.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., made the announcement.
“It’s surreal,” daughter Ivanka told CNN. “I’m so proud of my father. We all are.”
Despite the drama of Monday night, the anti-Trump contingent did not attempt to disrupt the the roll-call vote. Trump supporters again called for unity in the party as the battle against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton heats up.
