European Union investigating whether Elon Musk’s X followed social media law
The European Union has opened formal proceedings to investigate if X has breached its Digital Service Act, according to a statement released Monday. In October, investigators from the 27-nation bloc asked the social media platform for information on how it handled risk management, content moderation, dark patterns, advertising transparency, and data access for researchers. The EU is now investigating “suspected infringements” of the DSA but doesn’t prejudge the investigation's outcome, spokesman Johannes Bahrke said at a press briefing in Brussels. X said Monday that it will cooperate with the investigation.
What are the next steps? The special commission will continue to gather evidence about the case and could request more information or conduct interviews, the commission said. There is no deadline to bring the proceedings to an end.
