Death toll in listeria outbreak rises to nine
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday said at least nine people have died and 57 others have been hospitalized after being infected with listeria from Boar’s Head deli meats. The cases span 18 states and are connected to products that were part of a recall last month. Boar’s Head recalled more than 7 million pounds of meat across 71 products including pre-packaged sliced meats and meat intended for slicing at retail delis. According to the CDC, symptoms can take up to 10 weeks to appear and some of the recalled products have sell by dates as late as October. All of the recalled products have been removed from stores, according to the company.
Have there been any other food recalls this year? Perdue Foods earlier this month recalled some frozen breaded tenders and breast meat nuggets over concerns they could be contaminated with metal. Perdue recalled the products after thin metal wire was discovered in some of the packages, Perdue’s senior vice president of food safety and quality Jeff Shaw said in a statement. A salmonella outbreak sickened nearly 500 people across 31 states and Washington, D.C., earlier this year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fresh Start Produce Sales in May recalled cucumbers shipped across the country after some were found to be contaminated with salmonella.
