Congress reconvenes after recess, set to discuss federal spending
Members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate on Tuesday reconvened following the summer recess but did not take any votes on budget items. President Joe Biden and lawmakers in both chambers have called for a stopgap funding package to fund the federal government and avoid a shutdown. The House will only meet 11 times before the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.
What else are lawmakers prioritizing this session? As part of the budget negotiations, Congress will consider the White House's requests for additional funding for Ukraine and domestic disaster relief. Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy may call for a vote on whether to launch an impeachment inquiry into the president. House lawmakers this year launched a series of investigations into the Biden administration and the president’s son, Hunter Biden.
