The three countries on Tuesday immediately hit back with their own levies as U.S. blanket tariffs took effect, a month after being announced by President Donald Trump. The White House imposed 25% duties on Canadian imports and 10% on Canadian energy. Twenty-five percent tariffs on Mexican goods also took effect Tuesday. Finally, Trump doubled tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, saying China had not taken adequate steps to end the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
In first announcing the tariffs, Trump said the countries were not doing enough to stem the trafficking of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the United States.
What are the retaliatory tariffs, and how much are they taxing?
Beijing announced a 15% tariff on American chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton. China’s Ministry of Finance also ordered a 10% tariff on other products including fruits and vegetables. The ministry said Trump’s tariffs would lead to an increased burden on American consumers.
Canada imposed 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. exports on Tuesday and threatened to put more into place in 21 days. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that Trump was ignoring Canada’s thorough efforts to stop cross-border fentanyl trafficking. He also said he was pursuing other non-tariff strategies to end the new U.S. trade policies.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday said Mexico would also introduce retaliatory tariffs against the United States, but would wait until March 9 to do so. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said that Mexico offered to match the U.S. tariffs against China, Bloomberg reported.
