GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich suffers exodus of senior campaign staff members

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's campaign manager, press spokesman, and other key aides all resigned Thursday afternoon. They cited differences over the direction of the campaign but were not more specific.

Gingrich told the group he intends to stay in the race, they added. WORLD profiled Gingrich in the issue that went to press last Thursday and suggested that he had to deal honestly and forthrightly with his past if he hoped to gain support.

Among those who resigned: campaign manager Rob Johnson. That's particularly significant because Johnson was Texas Gov. Rick Perry's campaign manager last year when Perry won reelection by 13 percentage points. Perry is deciding whether to run for president, and he and Johnson are close. The Associated Press reported on May 27 that, should Perry decide to run, "he presumably comes to the table" without Johnson.
