Brazilian president officially ousted
The Brazilian Senate voted today to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office, culminating a yearlong political slugfest against a backdrop of social and economic instability in the country. Rousseff’s opponents accused her of corruption and mismanaging the federal budget. She countered that elites were targeting her for the populist policies of her Workers’ Party. Vice President Michel Temer, one of Rousseff’s most vehement critics, will serve the remainder of her term. Temer himself is an unpopular figure in Brazil who received angry boos when he announced the opening of the Olympics on Aug. 5.
