Albert Mohler addresses public’s concerns in health update
R. Albert Mohler Jr., the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and editor of WORLD Opinions, said Monday he is experiencing what he described as ongoing health episodes. While the episodes aren’t life-threatening, they have occurred at more than one public event, Mohler said in a Facebook video. The 66-year-old did not specify the symptoms he experienced, but said that he clearly appeared to be in distress during the incidents. Mohler said the episodes were the result of complications after a significant surgery.
He said he wanted to publicly address the episodes because of the alarm they had caused—with one recently occurring at an event in Washington. He said he’d already shared about the episodes with the Southern Baptist Convention school’s student body, governing board, and faculty in August 2024. The incidents have been unpleasant and embarrassing, Mohler said, but they were a manageable problem and not life-threatening. He added that he believes God was using them for his sanctification.
What other health concerns has Mohler shared? In 2023, Mohler said he was hospitalized for bilateral pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in both lungs. Mohler, who has led the seminary for more than 30 years, had a similar incident occur in 2007.
