Tipping the scales against Planned Parenthood

Each week, The World and Everything in It features a “Culture Friday” segment, in which Executive Producer Nick Eicher discusses the latest cultural news with John Stonestreet of the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview. This week, Trevin Wax from The Gospel Coalition filled in for Stonestreet.

Will a shocking video about Planned Parenthood harvesting the body parts of unborn children lead to the organization’s demise or just preach to the pro-life choir? Commentator Trevin Wax said the public’s reaction to the video is both encouraging and discouraging.

“It is so absolutely chilling that it provokes a visceral reaction, a kind of revulsion at the callous way in which a doctor can talk about … crushing certain parts of an unborn child in order to harvest other parts,” Wax said.

Reaction to the video made Planned Parenthood a trending topic on Twitter, but it took mainstream media outlets hours and even more than a day for some to cover the topic.

“When the mainstream media did begin to pay attention to the story, many of the articles read more like Planned Parenthood’s talking points,” Wax said.

With the Center for Medical Progress promising to release more shocking videos about Planned Parenthood receiving payment for providing baby body parts to medical researchers, Wax said the tide of public opinion could turn against the abortion provider.

“We have to get to a tipping point where supporting Planned Parenthood becomes toxic to people in the middle and to people on the left, so that eventually there is really no political gain in defending the organization any longer,” Wax said.
