White House: Trump helped son with Russia statement
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump helped his eldest son craft his response after reporters discovered he met with a Russian lawyer in 2016, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed to reporters on Tuesday. The New York Times reported last month Donald Trump Jr. met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in Trump Tower in June 2016. Trump Jr. issued a response statement the same day saying the meeting happened, but it was primarily about adoption policy. “The statement that Don Jr. issued is true," Sanders said, responding to reports that President Trump “dictated” the statement and that it was intentionally misleading. "There's no inaccuracy in the statement. The President weighed in as any father would based on the limited information that he had." After more damaging reports surfaced that Trump Jr. had other intentions with the meeting, he decided to post his emails on Twitter to give the full context. Trump Jr.’s emails revealed he knew at least part of the meeting was to get dirt on his father’s opponent, Hillary Clinton. “The Democrats want to continue to use this as a PR stunt and are doing everything they can to keep this story alive and in the papers every single day,” Sanders said. “The President, the American people, they voted America first, not Russia first, and that's the focus of our administration."
