The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department characterized the man’s injury as non-life-threatening in a Monday statement to WORLD. The person struck on Saturday during a shooting near the White House has not been identified by authorities. U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran on Sunday hoped that the person would make a full recovery.  Curran acknowledged the innocent bystander’s gunshot wound in a Sunday statement and hoped the unnamed victim would make a full recovery. Secret Service officers accidentally shot the bystander while exchanging fire with a 21-year-old who started shooting at a security checkpoint near the White House.

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the shooter as Nasire Best. The gunman had a violent history and possible obsession with America’s most cherished structure, according to a Sunday statement from President Donald Trump. He thanked federal officials for their swift actions.

Was the shooter known to law enforcement before? Police and court records show the 21-year-old Maryland man had previous run-ins with law enforcement. They arrested the man near the White House in July 2025 on trespassing charges, court documents obtained by Fox News showed. Best claimed to be Jesus Christ and asked to be arrested, according to police. Best was involuntarily committed to an institution in June 2025 for blocking a car from entering the White House complex, according to the document.
