Washington remembers Jan. 6

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a full schedule to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the day protesters entered the U.S. Capitol to halt the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory. At noon, the House floor will pray and observe a moment of silence. Time is allocated for lawmakers to share memories of evacuating and hiding as rioters ransacked the halls. House and Senate members will gather for an evening prayer vigil on the Capitol steps. Five people died in the riot and its immediate aftermath: One protester, Ashli Babbitt, was shot by police; three protesters died from medical emergencies during the incident; and police officer Brian Sicknick died the next day from a stroke that a medical examiner said was related to what he experienced at the Capitol.

What else is planned? Former President Donald Trump canceled his memorial event at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., blaming the Jan. 6 Select Committee tasked with investigating the riot. He was expected to reiterate accusations of fraud during the election and said he will discuss “many of those important topics” at an Arizona rally next week. Activist groups across the country are hosting vigils, memorials, voter registration drives, and events to decry or support election fraud claims. The White House announced Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will also make remarks.
