Virginia university resumes classes amid search for shooters

Classes began Monday at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Va., as law enforcement continued to search for additional suspects in a weekend shooting at the university that wounded five people. One suspect was already in custody. VSU President Makola Abdullah said Sunday that the school would move forward with its academic year as school officials continued to work closely with investigators. The additional suspects fired weapons during the on-campus shooting, according to the Associated Press. It was unclear whether they were aggressors or fired in self-defense, police said.

Police didn’t say how many additional suspects they were seeking. Officers on Saturday arrested one 19-year-old suspect, who was hiding inside a dormitory, after they found the five victims wounded near the university’s Quad Annexes. The suspect and most of the victims were not students. One of those wounded was in critical condition.

Chesterfield County Police did not immediately respond to WORLD’s request for more information on the ongoing search for suspects.
