Gov. Spencer Cox issued a declaration on Thursday, dubbing Sept. 10 as Charlie Kirk Day in Utah, to mark one year since the conservative commentator’s assassination. Kirk came to Utah to take part in the fundamental American tradition of speaking freely and debating ideas, Cox wrote on Thursday. The Turning Point USA founder was fatally shot on stage while addressing a large crowd on Utah Valley University’s campus green. Bystander photos and videos of the 31-year-old’s graphic death flooded social media hours before officials confirmed his death.

Vice President J.D. Vance, a close friend of the late advocate, described Kirk as the perfect combination of practicality and prudence during a Thursday interview. The greatest lesson Kirk’s life taught was being a good husband, being a good father, and investing time in meaningful things, Vance continued. The anniversary triggered an outpouring of eulogies from several top Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, FBI Director Kash Patel, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Various international leaders released statements honoring Kirk’s death, including U.K. Reform Party leader Nigel Farage, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and European Union Parliament member Christine Anderson.

How is TPUSA honoring the day? Kirk’s political advocacy group released a long Thursday message, reaffirming the group’s commitment to continuing Kirk’s legacy and work. Kirk’s faith gave him courage to spend his life working for something bigger than himself, and no one fought the good fight better than Kirk, according to TPUSA.

The group planned to honor Kirk’s memory and reflect on his impact with an event at Utah Valley University’s campus on Thursday night. The Republican National Committee’s ongoing midterm convention in Dallas scheduled a Thursday night tribute honoring Kirk, with Vance expected to address attendees.

What’s the courtroom status of Kirk’s shooter? Kirk’s accused assassin, Tyler Robinson, pleaded not guilty to all state and federal charges tied to the assassination. It remained unclear when the 23-year-old’s case would go to trial, but he could face the death penalty. The case underwent a highly publicized hearing in which Judge Tony Graf heard evidence leading him to ultimately rule that Robinson’s trial should go forward.
