Ukraine says its troops attacked Russia-occupied Crimea

Ukrainian officials on Thursday morning said their special forces landed on the Russian-occupied peninsula the night before. Kyiv said the troops engaged in a brief firefight with Russian forces and claimed Russia suffered losses. The Kremlin did not comment on the reported operation. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Kyiv has recently increased drone strikes on the peninsula to disrupt Russian supply lines that run through the region.

What else is happening in the war? Ukraine on Thursday celebrated its Independence Day on the 18-month anniversary of Russia’s invasion. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a speech on X, formerly known as Twitter, encouraging Ukrainians to continue fighting for the country and independence. Zelenskyy says Russia must agree to return all of Ukraine’s territory before he is willing to engage in peace talks.
