Ukraine civilians evacuate retaken regions
Ukrainian authorities on Monday asked civilians to move out of recently retaken towns where the infrastructure has been destroyed and head west. Russian shelling has devastated parts of Ukraine’s power grid, leaving many people without heat or power just in time for winter. Snow is already blanketing several Ukrainian cities, and scheduled blackouts will occur in 15 Ukrainian regions for four hours or longer on Monday.
What’s happening in the war? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian military on Sunday struck nearly 400 times by air. Some shells landed near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant—Russia and Ukraine blame each other for those shells. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there has been damage to the site “but no radiation release or loss of power.” IAEA experts on Monday will assess the plant, the agency said.
