Candidates for U.K. prime minister line up
The Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee, which runs leadership contests, laid out the rules Monday for the upcoming prime minister race. Meanwhile, nearly a dozen candidates are rushing to differentiate themselves from their competition — many of them by promising tax cuts to various segments of British society. The field of contenders includes junior minister Rehman Chishti, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi, trade minister Penny Mordaunt, former health secretaries Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt, and lawmakers Tom Tugendhat and Kemi Badenoch.
What will the race look like? The 358 Conservative lawmakers will likely reduce the number of candidates to two during a two-stage process. All the Conservative Party members across the country will then vote in a postal ballot election for their pick. The victor in that election will then become the new prime minister.
