U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee dies of cancer at age 74
The Texas congresswoman’s office issued a statement on Friday acknowledging her death, describing her as a people’s champion beloved by her district. Her office and family did not disclose a cause of death, but the Associated Press reported that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic and breast cancer. She served the constituents of her district for more than 30 years, the statement said.
While in Congress, Jackson Lee fought for racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights at a local, national, and international level, according to her office. She consistently voted for pro-abortion legislation, according to Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
What have others had to say about her? U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday called Jackson Lee an unrelenting leader in achieving racial justice and building the economy. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Saturday also mourned the congresswoman, saying she was a champion of constitutional and human rights. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., said Jackson Lee and he disagreed on politics, but she was a friend of his who stood up for her beliefs.
