U.S. offers $800 million more to Ukraine
President Joe Biden announced Thursday he will send Ukraine an additional $800 million in military aid and $500 million in direct economic support. He also declared Russia-affiliated ships will be barred from U.S. ports. Congress still needs to approve the aid. The military support is meant to help in the escalating battle in the eastern region of Ukraine, while the economic support is supposed to fund communities and pay essential workers.
What’s in the package? It is expected to include 72 howitzers, long-range weapons like cannons that can be positioned to fire artillery at both high and flat angles, and vehicles to tow them. It will also include 144,000 artillery rounds, more than 120 tactical drones, and field equipment. This installment brings total U.S. military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded to well over $3 billion. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the economic boost is just the beginning.
