The most recent nationwide data on in vitro fertilization showed that 100,158 U.S. babies were born through the procedure in 2024, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine announced. This marked the first time more than 100,000 babies had been born in the United States through the procedure in a single year, according to the organization. The report, which was compiled by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, was limited in that it only drew from 364 U.S. fertility clinics that reported their data, meaning the true nationwide total may be even higher. Patients underwent 449,772 IVF treatment cycles that year.

IVF still accounts for a small percentage of overall U.S. births, as 3.6 million American babies were born in 2024, according to the National Vital Statistics System. But the new report marks a jump in known and recorded IVF births, which were already steadily increasing. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 95,860 babies were born through IVF in 2023, up from 91,771 in 2022.

Did the report give insight into IVF trends and changes? Most IVF births recorded in the dataset were of a single baby, with twins accounting for just 2.6% of births. Those numbers marked a huge shift in IVF practices over the last decade, according to the society. Although transferring multiple embryos at once used to be standard procedure, about 79% of the transfers in the latest data were of only one embryo.
