U.S., Chinese officials discuss trade amid political tensions

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on Monday agreed to form a group of officials and business representatives to discuss commercial issues between the countries. That group will hold its first meeting in early 2024. The leaders also plan to share information about export controls and restrictions that have increased political tensions. The United States last year banned Chinese companies from buying advanced American computer chips without a license. Meanwhile, China has issued bans on other types of American-made technology.

Why is this visit significant? Raimondo is the latest American official to visit Beijing as the United States works to improve ties with China. Her trip follows recent visits by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and Climate Envoy John Kerry.
