Two police officers shot in ambush-style attacks
A San Antonio police detective died and a St. Louis officer is clinging to life after separate ambush-style shootings overnight. An as-yet unidentified suspect shot the Texas officer, Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force, as he sat in his squad car writing a traffic ticket. Investigators do not believe the shooter had any ties to the motorist Marconi originally stopped. No arrests have been made. The St. Louis police sergeant is listed in critical condition after suffering two gunshot wounds to the face. Doctors expect him to survive. He was sitting in traffic, in a marked police vehicle, when a man wanted for other violent crimes walked up and shot through the car’s window. Police later shot and killed the suspect, who has not been named. Officials also declined to name the officer but described him as a married father of three who has been with the department for about 20 years.
