Two earthquakes strike China on the same day
China is reeling from two earthquakes that struck in different parts of the country Wednesday, killing at least 19 people and injuring hundreds of others. The first quake struck in a sparsely populated area of far northwestern China near the Kazakhstan border. It had a magnitude of 6.3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and damaged about 1,000 houses. The second quake struck about 1,360 miles away in Jiuzhaigou, near a national park popular with tourists. Most of those injured or killed were in Zhangzha township, home to hostels and restaurants catering to those visiting Jiuzhai Valley. Rescue crews dug through rubble with their hands and used detectors to search for signs of life amid collapsed buildings. The magnitude 6.5 temblor struck as an arts group performing in Jiuzhaigou began reenacting a scene from a 2008 earthquake that killed nearly 90,000 people. Some in the audience thought the shaking was part of the show.
