Trump weighs Iran nuclear deal decision
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump appears closer to announcing his decision on recertifying the Iran nuclear deal after telling reporters on Wednesday he knew what he would do but wasn’t yet ready to reveal it. White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told NBC on Thursday he wouldn’t comment on whether Trump will withdraw from the agreement or not: “But when the announcement is made it will fit into a fundamentally sound and broad strategy aimed at addressing Iran’s destabilizing behavior and prioritizing and protecting America’s vital interests.” Trump spoke to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday and called the Iran deal an embarrassment. The president also labeled Iran a reckless regime that destabilizes the Middle East and has vowed to destroy both Israel and the United States. Trump has until Oct. 15 to determine whether to certify Iran is complying with the deal’s parameters—or not. If he decertifies the accord, Congress could reintroduce sanctions dropped when President Barack Obama brokered the pact in 2015.
