Trump takes on congresswomen again at rally

Supporters of President Donald Trump attending a campaign rally for him in Greenville, N.C., Wednesday night chanted, “Send her back!” in reference to Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, one of four freshmen Democratic congresswomen with whom the president has an ongoing feud. “I think in some cases they hate our country,” he told attendees, describing the “hate-filled extremism” he believes the four women inspire. “They never have anything good to say. That’s why I say, ‘Hey if you don’t like it, let ’em leave, let ’em leave.’”

The rally was held a day after House Democrats voted to condemn Trump’s tweets directed at Omar and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Several Republicans have also criticized the president for his remarks.

Trump told reporters before he left Washington for the rally that he believed he was “winning the political argument” against the Democrats “by a lot.” He added, “If people want to leave our country, they can. If they don’t want to love our country, if they don’t want to fight for our country, they can. I’ll never change on that.” The president also referenced the House’s rejection of a resolution to impeach him, calling the maverick Democratic effort “ridiculous.”

Speaking in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said of the “Send her back!” chant, “I was not happy with it,” adding he “would certainly try” to stop the chant should it return at a subsequent rally.

WORLD has updated this report to include the president’s disavowal of supporters’ chants at the rally.
