Trump signs law federalizing shark attack alerts
The Federal Communications Commission will now release wireless emergency alerts to phones of nearby beachgoers warning of unsafe water conditions, including the possibility of an impending shark attack. Lulu’s Law, a new federal statute, will warn beachgoers about shark attacks and give families time, awareness, and protection, according to a Monday statement from Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala.
Britt, the bill’s sponsor, released a graphic explaining how the emergency alerts would be distributed after a shark attack to avoid additional attacks. The bill was named after Lulu Gribbin, an Alabama resident who suffered a shark attack in June 2024, less than two hours after another attack just a few miles away. She suffered nearly fatal injuries, and ultimately lost her left hand and right leg. Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala. praised the legislation on Monday as a commonsense solution to protect beachgoers from harm.
