Trump says he’s target of criminal probe into 2020 election
Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday wrote on Truth Social that he had received a letter from Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith indicating that he was the target of a probe into alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The investigation includes an examination of his alleged involvement in the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, Trump said. A spokesman for Smith declined to comment to The Associated Press about Trump’s statement.
What does this letter mean? The letter is an indication that he could soon be facing federal charges, Trump said. The former president received a similar letter earlier this year before being indicted for mishandling classified documents. Trump said he had four days to appear before the grand jury investigating the case.
