The Department of Education planned to release new guidance on protecting the right to pray in schools, President Donald Trump shared Monday. Trump mentioned the slated protections while addressing the White House Religious Liberty Commission at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.
Free religious exercise is a constitutionally protected, founding principle for all citizens, Education Department spokeswoman Savannah Newhouse told WORLD in a Monday statement. The Department of Education looked forward to supporting Trump in promoting religious liberty in schools across the country, she added. Neither Newhouse nor the president shared more details on the types of protections to be enacted.
What else did Trump say? The president highlighted several religious victories from his administration, including pardoning several pro-life protesters prosecuted under the Biden administration. The former administration was cold, and former President Joe Biden turned mean by the end, Trump said in reference to the protesters. He also praised his administration’s push to overturn the Johnson Amendment, a tax provision barring nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing political candidates.
Trump also highlighted the Department of Justice’s creation of task forces to eradicate anti-Christian bias within the federal government and investigate anti-Semitism on college campuses. Over 60 institutions of higher education are under investigation for civil liberty and First Amendment violations, Trump said Monday. Americans will never apologize for their faith, and religious communities will help usher in a golden age for the nation, Trump said.
