Trump plans to rescind DACA in six months
WASHINGTON—Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Tuesday the Trump administration will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, winding it down over the next six-months. President Barack Obama created the DACA program in 2012 to postpone deportation for certain non-citizens brought to the United States illegally as children. “If we are to further our goal of strengthening the constitutional order and the rule of law in America, the Department of Justice cannot defend this overreach,” Sessions said. As of Tuesday, the Trump administration will not act on any new DACA requests or associated applications. But it won’t take action against those enrolled in DACA until March 5, 2018, giving Congress time to figure out what to do with the thousands of people still in the United States because of the program. President Donald Trump wants lawmakers to find a solution. He tweeted on Tuesday morning that members of Congress should “get ready to do your job” on DACA. Sessions called the DACA program unconstitutional because the Obama administration circumvented U.S. immigration laws without congressional approval. “We are people of compassion,” Sessions said. “But there’s nothing compassionate about the failure to enforce immigration laws.”
