Trump officials grant last-minute extension of TPS immigration protections
Immigration officials on Friday extended the deadline for removing the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, from hundreds of thousands of noncitizens. Trump officials planned to revoke the TPS protections against deportation on Friday, before opting to extend the deadline for many nationalities by at least a week.
The policy deadline came several weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that immigration officials may legally end the TPS designation for Haitian and Syrian nationals. The pending action sparked rallies across the nation on Thursday, with the most publicized protests in New York and Chicago.
Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., said revoking TPS would hurt families and the American economy. Removing these protections will tear families apart and remove essential workers from the workforce, she wrote Friday.
Who will receive extensions? U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services released notices on Friday that natives of Somalia, Burma, Ethiopia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Syria would receive an additional week of TPS protection. Haitian nationals received an additional two weeks, according to the agency.
Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., issued a Friday statement calling for Trump officials to extend TPS for more than 170,000 Salvadorans throughout the country, though the status of Salvadoran migrants remained unclear.
