Trump Jr. downplays meeting with Russian lawyer
President Donald Trump’s eldest son shook off criticism Monday over reports he met with a Russian lawyer last summer. The New York Times reported Saturday that Donald Trump Jr. met with Natalia Veselnitskaya on June 9, 2016, in Trump Tower to discuss damaging information about his father’s opponent, Hillary Clinton. Trump Jr. told the Times he agreed to meet with Veselnitskaya, but it quickly became clear she had no meaningful knowledge. He said her comments were vague, ambiguous, and made no sense. “Obviously I'm the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent,” Trump Jr. jested on Twitter on Monday morning. “Went nowhere but had to listen.” In another tweet, he said his meeting with Veselnitskaya turned into a conversation primarily about adoption. White House counselor Kellyanne Conway criticized the Times and other media outlets for blowing the meeting out of proportion. “Everyone is trying to convert wishful thinking into hard evidence,” Conway told Good Morning America, referring to alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. "They haven't been able to do that."
