Trump huddles with NRA amid gun debate
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump huddled at the White House with the National Rifle Association’s top lobbyist on Thursday. The president made headlines and confused some of his fellow Republicans during a televised meeting with lawmakers on Wednesday when he suggested waiving due process for gun owners to confiscate their weapons. Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, left the White House on Thursday night claiming gun owners have nothing to fear from the Trump administration. “POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control,” he tweeted. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Friday morning Trump made no specific pledges to the NRA other than his support for the Second Amendment. She said the president still supports broadening gun background checks and raising the minimum age to purchase a rifle to 21—two policies at odds with the NRA. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday lawmakers are still weighing legislative options and he has no intention to bring a gun bill to the floor for a vote next week.
