About 30,000 children and adults were expected at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll Monday. President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and their son Barron kicked off the event, which includes an egg roll, egg hunt, egg dyeing, and other outdoor activities, including a music stage, a reading nook where members of the Trump administration read aloud to the children, and a station for kids to make greeting cards for U.S. troops. Before the event, the president made remarks touting the health of the U.S. economy. Most of his five children and nine grandchildren attended, including Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Vanessa, who recently filed for divorce. White House chief of staff John Kelly, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, and legislative affairs director Marc Short were also seen hand-in-hand with their children or grandchildren there. The event dates to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes allowed children to roll eggs on the White House lawn after the U.S. Capitol shooed them away.
