Trump, Democrats send mixed messages on DACA
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump pushed back Thursday morning on a claim from Democratic leaders that they struck a deal to legalize the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. “No deal was made last night on DACA,” Trump tweeted. “Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., released a joint statement Wednesday night after meeting with Trump over dinner. The Democratic leaders said the three agreed to enshrine DACA protections into law quickly and to work together on a package of border security that does not include funding for a border wall. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said while the trio discussed DACA and border security, the president did not agree to excluding the wall. Earlier this month, Trump decided to wind down the DACA program, which shields nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation and gave Congress six months to provide a legislative fix. “Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated, and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military? Really!” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. “They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own—brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security.”
