Trump brings tax reform to top of to-do list
President Donald Trump renewed his push for tax reform Tuesday at a kickoff event in Springfield, Mo. The president said he wants a tax code that is “pro-growth, pro-worker, and pro-American,” and he’s committed to working with Republicans and Democrats to achieve it. Trump called for lowering tax rates, simplifying the tax code, and closing loopholes used by big businesses. He also promised once again to walk away from the North American Free Trade Agreement if he’s not happy with whatever comes of ongoing trade talks with Canada and Mexico. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., both said Republicans are united on the fundamentals of a GOP tax reform plan, and they expect to get it done. Trump added in his speech Tuesday that he’s tired of Congress letting him down: “I don’t want to be disappointed by Congress. Do you understand me?”
