Trump admits he has no recordings of Comey talks
President Donald Trump ended a month of speculation about whether he secretly recorded conversations with former FBI Director James Comey with one tweet: “I did not make and do not have any such recordings.” Trump sent his tweet Thursday, long after the furor he ignited in May when he suggested Comey wasn’t telling the truth about their conversations and said Comey “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Comey called Trump’s bluff during a Senate committee hearing earlier this month, saying he hoped the president did make recordings. Comey also revealed how the president’s tweet prompted him to leak to the press a memo recounting the conversation in which the president allegedly asked him to stop investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn. A week after the leak, the Justice Department appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate the entire Russian election meddling scandal and links to the Trump campaign.
