Trump, 18 others indicted in Georgia over 2020 election
The Fulton County, Ga., prosecutor has charged lawyers and aides of former President Donald Trump with engaging in a “criminal enterprise.” An indictment released late Monday alleges they tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Georgia prosecutors are using an anti-racketeering law sometimes associated with organized crime cases. This is Trump’s fourth criminal indictment in recent months. He has pleaded not guilty to the other charges while continuing his 2024 campaign for president. Trump leads in the polls among candidates seeking the Republican Party’s nomination.
What is Trump’s response? The former president and his allies have characterized the investigation as politically motivated. A document listing the charges against Trump was published online and taken down earlier in the day before the jury returned the indictment—an occurrence that Trump’s legal team said was an example of the day’s “shocking and absurd” events. On his social media platform, Trump questioned why the charges were not brought 2.5 years ago.
