Tropical storm brings more grief to earthquake-hit Haiti

Authorities in Haiti paused recovery and damage assessment efforts on Tuesday as Tropical Storm Grace drenched the quake-hit southern region with heavy rain and high winds on Monday night. Haiti’s civil protection agency encouraged “good neighbors whose space has not been affected” to help others displaced by the disaster. Nine people drowned in the hard-hit city of Les Cayes when floodwaters rushed into a building where refugees sought shelter. Haiti raised the death toll from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake to 1,941 people and more than 9,900 others injured.

Any updates on the disaster response? Hospitals in the southern region are still receiving more patients from isolated villages, overwhelming their limited space and supplies. In the city of Cap-Haitien, angry men gathered outside a collapsed building, yelling for more support. Jerry Chandler, head of the Civil Protection Agency, acknowledged “people are getting aggressive” after authorities paused response efforts. The USS Arlington, a U.S. Navy amphibious warfare ship, will head for Haiti on Wednesday with a surgical team and landing craft. The U.S. military’s Southern Command will also send eight helicopters from Honduras to aid the Haiti response.
