Train carrying GOP lawmakers collides with truck
An Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to a policy retreat collided with a large garbage truck in Crozet, Va., on Wednesday. “There were no reported injuries to passengers or crew members,” an Amtrak spokesperson said in a statement. “Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting the equipment for damage.” Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., a passenger on the train, told The Washington Post one person aboard the truck was killed, and two others injured. GOP Reps. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, Michael Burgess of Texas, and Phil Roe of Tennessee—all doctors—attended to the injured truck passengers until first responders arrived. The train departed from Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning carrying about 100 lawmakers en route to a Republican retreat held at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. The collision occurred at 11:20 a.m. according to Amtrak.
