Law enforcement officials in Texas found more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a shipment of cabbages, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced Thursday. The DEA said its office in McAllen, Texas, performed the bust after a Homeland Security investigation involving several federal agencies. The Texas Department of Public Safety also assisted in the probe. The DEA’s McAllen office shared a video of agents peeling back outer layers of cabbage leaves to reveal tightly wrapped packages of illegal drugs inside.
McAllen is a border town across from Reynosa, Mexico. Officials did not say whether the drugs had crossed the border, where they were headed, or who was trafficking them.
Have drug runners used this tactic before? U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered a similar shipment of suspected methamphetamine hidden in cabbage in July at the Pharr International Bridge near McAllen. They found 1,173 pounds of the narcotics with the help of a drug-sniffing dog and an imaging scan, according to the CBP.
