Top pro golfer Scottie Scheffler charged with assaulting policeman

Scottie Scheffler was in Louisville, Ky., on Friday morning heading to the PGA Championship when the incident occurred. At the time, a detective with the Louisville Metro Police Department was directing traffic outside the Valhalla Golf Course due to a fatal crash, according to a police arrest report. Police say Scheffler ignored an order to follow a detour. Instead, he allegedly accelerated and dragged the officer to the ground, according to the arrest report. The officer suffered pain, swelling, and cuts to his left wrist and knee, police said.

What is Scheffler charged with? Police arrested Scheffler at the Valhalla Golf Club and charged him with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. He was briefly booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on Friday morning.

Does Scheffler have any explanation? Scheffler attorney Steve Romines told local Fox affiliate WDRB News that Scheffler received conflicting instructions from different officers, and the golfer became confused.

Who is Scheffler? Currently considered the world’s No. 1 golfer, Scheffler won the Masters last month and in 2022. He has finished in the top 20 in his four starts at Augusta National Golf Club. He has six top-10 finishes worldwide in 2024, including wins in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship, according to his bio on the Masters website.
